Jean-Baptiste Dupont is a musician who embraces the richness of the organ’s vast repertoire, from the Renaissance to the present day, with a predilection for improvisation, a discipline in which he is considered as one of the finest representatives of the French school.
He has given almost 600 recitals throughout Europe, the USA and Russia, in prestigious venues including the cathedrals of Berlin, Cologne, Copenhagen, London, Monaco, New York, Paris, Toledo, Vienna and Zurich, the Mariinsky Concert Hall and the St Petersburg Conservatoire, the Bolshoi Theatre and the Moscow Conservatoire, and the Berlin and Essen Philharmonic Orchestras… He is regularly invited to give masterclasses and conferences on both improvisation and interpretation. He has been a member of competition juries in the USA, France, Norway, Sweden and Germany. Recognised for his work on Max Reger’s music, he was involved in the international symposium organised by the Max Reger Institute and the Academy of Science and Literature in Mainz (Germany) in October 2012, and in 2016 he took part in a number of events marking the centenary of the composer’s death.
His discography comprises some fifteen discs, including: the complete organ works of Max Reger, currently in progress, which have so far been warmly acclaimed by international critics (his version of the chorale fantasia Opus 52-3 was chosen over six other versions in France-Musique’s ‘Le Jardin des Critiques’ programme) and a debut CD of improvisation on the Hortus label; and Widor’s 8th symphony, on the Audite label, already recognised as a reference recording by the musical press. In 2023, he released the 9th disc of the complete Reger series, and a new improvisation album recorded at Monaco Cathedral, both on the Hortus label.
Following his musical studies, he was a finalist and prize-winner in many international competitions both in improvisation and interpretation. He won the prestigious first prize at the St Albans International Improvisation Competition (England, July 2009); the second prize, audience prize, governor’s prize and Glinka Foundation and De Boni Arte Foundation prizes at the ‘Mikael Tariverdiev’ International Interpretation Competition in Kaliningrad, Russia, in 2009; and third prize at the ‘Xavier Darasse’ International Interpretation Competition in Toulouse in October 2008.
After holding a number of organist posts since 1997, in April 2012 he won a competition to be appointed titular organist at Bordeaux Cathedral.
In 2014, he co-founded the association “Cathedra” (sacred music at Bordeaux Cathedral). He shares its artistic direction alongside Alexis Duffaure. He is very committed to the reconstruction project for the cathedral’s organ.
Having acquired extensive experience in the field of organology through his work on the Midi-Pyrénées organ inventory and his involvement in numerous organ restoration projects between 1998 and 2004, he has been working as an independent expert since 2018.
